The Ohio State University College of Medicine
Columbus, OH
Hi, my name is Katie. I’m a fourth year medical student at Ohio State; having grown up in Columbus I have always been a Buckeye at heart! I attended Worthington Kilbourne High School and then headed off to college at Miami University. There, I studied Zoology and Spanish and participated in club gymnastics. Growing up, I idolized my grandfather who was an internal medicine physician here in Columbus. Because of this, I always knew I wanted to be a physician. In addition, I love working with children, and therefore I plan to pursue a career in Pediatrics.
My passion for global health began in high school when I attended a mission trip to build homes in Tijuana, Mexico. Just minutes from the US border, I was amazed by how little families had to live on. One little boy stands out in my memory: this was an eight year-old Mexican child named Juan who struggled with Cerebral Palsy. His parents made a mere $70 per month, and could not afford a stable home let alone healthcare for this sick child. Instead of a wheelchair he spent his days in a stroller, a difficult mode of transport through the dirt streets of Mexico. Our group constructed a home for this family, but I felt there was so much more that could be done. From that moment on I knew that my future was in global healthcare.
I am thrilled to be a member of this Ride for World Health team and our mission to increase awareness of the health disparities around the world. I look forward to seeing the country and hope you will join us at one of our many stops! |
