Director, The Office of Global Health Education
Executive Vice Dean, The Ohio State University College of Medicine

Daniel D. Sedmak, M.D., is the executive vice dean of the College of Medicine and the director of The Office of Global Health Education (OGHE) in the OSU College of Medicine (COM).  Created in 2005 in response to student interest in global health, the OGHE manages international clinical rotations for medical students, including development of new sites throughout the developing world. Recent educational affiliation trips have included academic medical centers in Southern India and mainland China. The OGHE is also creating a multileveled global health curriculum leading to a certificate program for medical students.  Facilitating this, the OSU COM is a member of the Global Health Education Consortium, a consortium of faculty and health care educators dedicated to international health education in U.S. and Canadian medical schools and residency programs.  The OGHE also works with faculty to assist in affiliations that promote the research mission of the medical center.

In January 2007, Dr. Sedmak was appointed to the International Programs Task Force by OSU President Karen Holbrook.  The task force was charged with assessing the status and impact of international activities on campus as well as with developing and articulating an institutional commitment to global activities.  Currently he serves on the OSU International Strategic Task Force created by President Gordon Gee.

Dr. Sedmak’s past international activities include invited presentations at international meetings (England, France, Germany, the Netherlands, South Korea, Sweden, etc.) on his NIH-funded basic research into viral persistence, invited presentations and courses on renal pathology in Japan, Australia, Italy and Ecuador, creation, co-directorship and moderator of two International Transplant Vascular Sclerosis Conferences in Bermuda, and principal organizer, director and moderator of  “Faith-Based Initiatives and the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief,” held at Georgetown University, Washington, D.C., in November, 2003, which culminated in the proceedings entitled HIV/AIDS: The Faith Community Responds.  This conference was followed by visits to the countries of Botswana, South Africa, Mozambique, Italy and Vatican City to foster HIV/AIDS outreach for Georgetown University.

On a personal level, Dr. Sedmak served as the initial advisor to Ride for World Health, a medical student led trans-American bicycle trip to educate the American public on global health concerns.  The ride raised over $60,000 for the international nonprofit medical assistance organization Partners in Health.  Dr. Sedmak has also participated in medical missions to Puerto Bermudez in the Peruvian Amazon, Trinidad and Tobago, and in April 2007, to Haiti.
