Hi there! For those of you who don’t know me, I’m Megan Buller, a fourth year medical student at THE Ohio State University College of Medicine. Being from Michigan, I get a lot of flack from the folks back home, but as a proud Notre Dame graduate I’ve gotten pretty used to that. After graduating from ND with a degree in Spanish Literature and Arts & Letters Pre-professional Studies (a fancy name for “pre-med) I headed down to the Caribbean where I spent a year doing volunteer work in Puerto Rico. While down there I met some great people who opened my eyes to some of the healthcare problems they face there, especially with the homeless population.
When I got back to the States and started medical school, I decided that I wanted to get involved in global health any way that I could. I was an officer in the International Health Interest Group and have volunteered at the Latino Free Clinic since the beginning of Med 1. My favorite part of working at the clinic is that I get the chance to work with the international community right here in Columbus, and I’m hoping to be able to apply some of what I’ve learned from working at the clinic when I head down to Peru next fall. Now I have the opportunity to get involved in another aspect of global health—education and advocacy. The Ride is such a cool and unique opportunity that I thought it would be a perfect way to round out my global-health-while-in-med-school experience (and when else do you get to ride your bike across the country for such a great cause?). After finishing up with med school, I’m planning on a career in Internal Medicine/Pediatrics and wherever global health may take me... |
